PostHeaderIcon Four Common Stunt Kite Flight Problems

The stunt kite flight behavior can be erratic and for the novice pilot they may seem too difficult to resolve. Here is a list of four of the problems you may run into while learning to pilot your new stunt kite. These minor problems happen to all of us and with a little experience will help you avoid them. This way they will not seem like major problems.

The Stunt Kite Flight is Not as Expected

This is one of the common things that beginners encounter. If you happen to notice that your kite is behaving peculiarly, then you should do an overall check on it. If it is the first time you tried to launched it, make sure that you assembled it properly. Most kite kits include an easy to follow instructions; therefore, it is best that you read it once again just to make sure. Make sure that the bridle lines of the kite are not wrapped around any spars. After that, check the bridle setting, if it is correctly established.

The Kite Turns or Dives into the Ground Just After Liftoff

This thing happens usually when there is something wrong with the lines, in terms of its positioning. Make sure that the right line goes to the right side of the stunt kite while the left line on its left side. The flying lines of your kite should have the same length. If one of the lines is longer than the other line, the kite will always have a tendency to turn towards the side with the longer line. You can also check if the bridle settings are the same, in this kind of situation. Make sure to do these things so that your kite will no longer dive, and instead soar high when you lift it off.

Your Kite Flies Too Slow or Too Fast

One thing that you should always keep in mind is that control lines can have a significant effect on your stunt kites’ flying performance. If your kite has a short line, it will be more responsive, but it will go faster as well. With a longer line, the kite will fly slower, giving you time to respond and make adjustments, but it can also become more sluggish. If you want your kite to have better maneuverability, then you should adjust your lines accordingly.

Twisted or Tangled Control Lines

This is usually caused by unwinding lines off the reel or handle at the opposite direction where they were supposed to be wound on. Therefore, it is best to avoid it, which is by making sure that when you first start to unwind the lines; they are coming off from the reel untwisted.

The Sport or Stunt Kite?

In its most basic configuration the sports kite is a delta shape controlled with two lines. Construction will vary, but mostly you will see them in a lightweight rip-stop nylon or rip-stop polyester. The spars will be made of light weight carbon fiber tubing.

Control lines for flying are made from a braided spectra, it is very light and has no stretch. It stays very slippery even when being wrapped up many times.

Controlling a Sport Kite

With the two lines one on the right hand and one on the left hand. A pilot will just pull on the right hand line to make the kite to go right and if he wants to turn left he will just pull on the left hand line. To control the pitch requires different amounts of tension on the control lines. This accomplished by running or walking backwards or forwards.

To create tricks and different patterns in the stunt kites flight a pilot will use a combination of pushes and pulls on the control lines to create complex flight patterns. The flight patterns are just amazing and very in difficulty from loops, flips turns end over end to simple turns. Sport kites can reach speed as high as 60 mph in a dive or perform a stall and just drop out of the sky. Flight characteristics of your average sport kites are just incredible the maneuvers they can perform.

Stunt kites are designed to fly in many different conditions. The standard kites are best suited for 3 to 9 miles per hour. But some designs of sport kite will fly in winds of 30 mph or more. There are even some designs of sport kites that are made of very lightweight materials. Very delicate and will fly with the lightest breeze and some will even fly indoors.

Over the last few years developments of multi-line kites have given way to the sport of kite flying. The sport has spawned the competition between kite fliers. The performances are judged in a similar fashion as the ballet and figure skating. Performances have compulsory figures as in figure skating and artistic interpretation of music like the ballet.

Competitions are performed by individuals, sometimes pairs of pilots and also in teams. The most exciting competitions that create the most spectacular performances are the team kite flying. You can see as many as eight pilots stacking kites with tails inches apart and a deep breath away from a disaster. The team will perform all kinds of spectacular formations in the air.

International and national competitions are held under “STACK” (Sport Team Competitive Kiting). The annual World Championship was held in 2008 in Berck Sur Mer, France.

Sport Kite contests are held in the United States via the American Kitefliers Association an organization that oversees sport kite contests. A number of regions hold competitions and the winners get invited the the annual AKA Convention for national championships.

In the United States, the American Kitefliers Association is the umbrella organization for sport kite contests. Competition winners from the various regions are invited to the annual AKA convention for national championships.

Back in 1996 two organizations STACK and AJSKA (American Kitfliers Association and the Japanese Sport Kite Association) met to form what we have today. The IRBC (The International Rule Book Committee) standardized the rules and processes for competition kite flying.
